Description
Once, I have read about Tripolie-Cucuteni culture during one of my applications for a Romanian Arts Lab. I was immediately charmed with it. An article ‘Weaving house life and death into places: A blueprint for a hypermedia narrative’ describes intriguing phenomenon, which was practiced by Cucuteni - the Horizon of burned houses - as Domithanasia, and it sounds both sacred and wise, with deep symbolism of transformation, death and rebirth.
In this neolithic culture houses were burnt every 75-80 years, and the researchers are not agreeing on was it made intentionally or was a result of forests fires, neighbors attacks, or something else. The way the houses were burnt is also highly questionable, because the temperature inside the house should have been very high to turn the clay into the glass.
When I have read an article about the Horizon of burned houses, I noticed that they mentioned a bright orange color of the ceramic leftovers from the old houses. Then, a layer above it, a new house was built. That is why at my painting – hidden burning ceramic layer under the earth as a foundation for the new house. It is also a metaphor for the hidden information about the Cucuteni heritage, buried by passed centuries.
As for the theme of stars, I always associate them with life and rebirth. Similarly to the supernova, they burn out to be reborn – just like Cucuteni houses.
